Mandatory signs

They prescribe how you must drive or behave. They can indicate a direction, a minimum speed or a route intended for specified users.

How can you recognise this group?

Most are circular, with a blue background and a white symbol. Diagonal red bars on selected signs mark the end of that obligation.

How do they work on the road?

The obligation must be followed at the place and within the scope indicated. A plate may specify the users covered or an exception.

  • Read the exact direction or method of passage shown by the symbol.
  • Check whether the sign designates a route for pedestrians, cyclists or both.
  • C-12, roundabout, does not by itself give priority to vehicles already circulating.
  • A supplementary plate may limit or clarify the obligation.

Legal basis for Polish road signs

The meaning and scope of road signs are defined by the Polish regulation on road signs and signals. This guide also includes changes effective from 19 February 2026; always check the current status of the act in ELI for legal matters.
